Client reviews enable you to collaborate on and review media with clients.

You can manage and run client review sessions directly within ftrack’s user-friendly interface. Easily set up a session with media already present on your server and invite collaborators to join the session via email. They’ll receive a link to the session. Once in, they can make notes and annotations on your work and mark their approval. When the session is complete you can set status on the reviewed items and transfer any feedback you wish to share with the team back into ftrack.

Create client reviews
When setting up a review session, an ftrack user, with appropriate permissions, starts by creating a session, setting relevant details and adding content. When the review is ready for feedback, the user can add collaborators and send them invites by email for joining the session.

Using client reviews

A client review session presents a collection of media on which collaborators can leave their feedback. It can only be accessed at specific times through uniquely generated invites sent to each collaborator.

When a collaborator follows the special link received via an invite, they are presented with the review interface:

Tip: Mobile/touch device support means that the collaborator user interface works just as well on the go as it does on desktop.

Playback

Clicking an item in the playlist at the bottom will cause the selected item to be either played or displayed (depending on file type) in the viewing area above.

Use the on screen controls to play/pause media or to jump to a specific time in the currently loaded media. Clicking on the playing media itself will cause it to pause.

Tip: Use the following keyboard shortcuts to speed up your work:

  • Left/Right arrows  to step between frames.
  • Ctrl + Shift + Left/Right arrows  to step between items in the timeline.
  • Spacebar  to play/pause a video clip.

Any feedback added to a video clip is visible as colored circles on the timeline. This makes it easy to see which portions of the video have the most feedback and who has commented, as each collaborator is associated with their own color.

You can see which collaborator is assigned which color by looking at the left edge of the comment in the feedback panel.

Clicking the left or right arrows at either side of the viewing area will navigate between the items on the timeline.

Feedback

Feedback can be added at any time by writing a comment in the text field below the viewer or by annotating the currently displayed video or image using the annotation tools. Display the annotation tools by clicking the brush at the right in the comment field.

Annotations made on a frame will automatically be attached as a file to a comment upon submit.

A collaborator can also mark an item as either approved or requiring changes by toggling the relevant status buttons.

Note: Each collaborator has their own approval status for each item in the timeline so no need to worry about disagreements between collaborators!

Tip: Annotations can also be enabled via the keyboard shortcuts:

  • B  to activate Brush tool.
  • A  to activate Arrow tool.
  • C to activate Circle tool.
  • S  to activate Square tool.
  • E  to activate Eraser tool.

Zoom and pan

Zooming and panning can be done using the Zoom and Pan tools in the interface.

Tip: Zoom and Pan can be activated via keyboard shortcuts:

  • Z  to activate Zoom in/out tool.
  • ALT  toggle between zoom in and out if Zoom tool is enabled.
  • H  to activate Pan tool.

Tip: you can pan media by holding down the middle mouse button.

Downloads

A download button will appear next to the viewer tools if downloads are enabled by the creator of the review. The original file, together with the compressed version, can be downloaded if they are available.

Client review export

Review feedback can be exported to PDF format using the “Generate report” button. All comments will be included in the generated PDF file alongside time stamps and thumbnails.
